Master’s thesis in Data & AI: Optimization of sustainable energy sources and energy infrastructure (Project SEMS)

We face a challenge of transitioning to sustainable energy sources while optimizing the existing infrastructure. Your task is to develop a deep learning model that uses historical weather data and energy demand to identify optimal locations for wind turbines, solar panels and water turbines. This includes considering the energy grids capacity and environmental factors, such as avoiding residential areas and nature parks. The goal is to enhance energy generation efficiency without overloading the grid.

  • The current energy landscape faces the challenge of an accelerated transition to sustainable energy sources and the optimization of the energy infrastructure. An essential aspect of this transition is the effective deployment of wind turbines, solar panels, and water turbines in locations that are both favorable for energy generation and compatible with the existing energy infrastructure. The challenge lies in using available historical weather and energy consumption patterns while considering the capacity of the energy grid.

    The Assignment

The assignment involves developing and implementing a deep learning model that, based on historical weather data and energy demand, identifies the most suitable locations for placing green energy sources near companies utilizing SEMS. This includes considering the existing energy infrastructure and preventing overload in the energy grid. Additionally, it must take nature and the environment into account, ensuring that wind turbines are not placed in residential areas or nature parks.

You will investigate how an advanced algorithm, utilizing historical weather forecasts and energy demand data, can optimally identify suitable locations for implementing wind turbines, solar panels, and water turbines. The study will involve analyzing historical data related to weather patterns, energy consumption patterns, and the existing energy infrastructure.

Subsequently, the algorithm will be developed based on the research findings. The algorithm should be capable of selecting optimal locations for sustainable energy sources, with the output aligned with the capacity of the existing energy infrastructure. Furthermore, the algorithm should be dynamic enough to accommodate variations in weather conditions and energy demand.

    Graduation Project SEMS
This master’s thesis is part of the SEMS graduation project. Our goal with these graduation assignments is to build a Sustainable Energy Management System that manages the distribution and load-balancing of green energy. The amount of green energy generated by sources such as solar panels and wind turbines fluctuates continuously. If it is possible to distribute this energy effectively, it should meet demand at any time of the day. Ultimately, we want the system to ensure that you can function independently of the national power grid at any moment (month, week, day, hour). The entire project has been divided into various graduation assignments, and this is one of them.
